This project was completed in the Spring 2026 semester as part of the "Museum Information Management: Collection Cataloging & Digital Technology" course at Pratt Institute, overseen by professors Jen Cwiok and Iris Lee.
Omeka S is an open-source web application for managing, cataloging and publishing material online. This latest version includes integration with semantic web ontologies. Utilizing the Omeka S platform, I built a public-facing website for cataloging and ascribing metadata to webcomics.
This project was built on the principles of linked data, with the creation of a resource template, defined parameters of descriptive fields, and controlled vocabularies. I navigated the application backend fluently working simultaneously with other classmates, customizing descriptive fields to meet the needs of users, applied descriptive standards to a common metadata ontology (Dublin Core, VRA) and applied original metadata to objects in my collection.
The stated goals of the course were:
Develop in students an appreciation for and interest in advancing information management in museums, particularly collections information.
Provide aspiring museum professionals greater insight into museum information management by inviting professionals working with museum collections, including libraries and archives, to present real-world applications of data management.
Get students excited about new technologies for making museums’ information more widely available and usable for society at-large.
"Why webcomics?"
Webcomics were, and are, a major source of personal creative inspiration; however, discovering webcomics relies primarily on word-of-mouth between webcomics readers and artists. I identified a significant gap between the amount of published, bibliographic comics that are cataloged in libraries compared to their digital counterparts.
In order to bridge the gap, I decided to use this project as an opportunity to learn about cataloging resources with digital and bibliographic characteristics. The full website, designed with custom CSS, includes summaries about the topic of webcomics, the contextual inspiration and cultural value of cataloging webcomics, a case study of the webcomic Octopus Pie by Meredith Gran, and finally a fully cataloged item set of 20 webcomics, all completed by yours truly.
